HOT NEWS FLASH.... DO YOU SUFFER FROM DRY MOUTH?
Take this simple test:
Try chewing a cracker without sipping any water. If you can't -
you suffer from dry mouth.
We need saliva to moisten and cleanse our mouths from bacteria.
But, saliva also helps your body digest food, make it possible
to taste, as well as chew and swallow your food properly.
There are several causes for dry mouth. Prescription and over
the counter medications are the most common causes of dry mouth.
These include antihistamines, decongestants, painkillers,
diuretics, antihypertensives (blood pressure medications), and
antidepressants. Dry mouth is a potential side effect of more
than 400 medications. Dry mouth may also result from radiation
treatment for head and neck cancers, autoimmune diseases such as
Lupus and Sjogrens Syndrome, as well as salivary gland disease,
emotional stress, and diabetes. Hormonal alterations associated
with menopause have also been associated with dry mouth. Getting
relief from dry mouth may not be as hard as you think. Dr.
Hameroff offers Omni Breathtech mouth spray to assist you in
keeping your oral tissues moist. You may also purchase Biotene
dry mouth products from your local drugstore. Other home
remedies include:chewing sugar free gum or candy (to stimulate
salivary flow), frequent sips of water, alcohol free mouth
rinses, and restricting your intake of caffeine, alcohol, and
carbonated beverages. Tell your dentist what medications you are
taking as well as other health issues so that we may identify a
solution to your dry mouth. |
